How, in practical terms, does one go about prayerfully “being watchful,”
– and not only “watchful,” but “in gratitude”? In practice, I find
that the two are connected. When I am “watchful,” I take note of the ups and downs of my day, jotting these down in
a notebook for just a few minutes before I go to sleep. And in connection with
prayer this little exercise brings me gratitude, because I begin to see my life as God’s work in
progress, as a journey in Him, rather than letting it pass me by meaninglessly. So for me, “life” is not,
as John Lennon sadly noted, “what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”
Today let me take a few minutes to “be watchful,” because I know
that this brings me gratitude, - and gratitude changes everything. Lord, open
my eyes today, that I may see what You have to show me, in the circumstances,
failures or successes You send my way this summer day.
